For the Gemini Nano model download
Most modern integrated and discrete GPUs work
ReviewShield Pro uses Chrome's built-in Prompt API, which runs Google's Gemini Nano model entirely on your device. Your review data never leaves your browser.
Setup Steps
Open Chrome Settings > About Chrome (or paste the URL below into your address bar) and make sure you're on version 138 or later.
chrome://settings/help
If an update is available, install it and relaunch Chrome.
Open Chrome's components page to check whether Gemini Nano is installed:
chrome://components
Look for "Optimization Guide On Device Model" in the list. If it shows a version number (e.g. 2025.8.8.1141), the model is already installed and you're good to go.
If you see "Status - Not found" or "Version: 0.0.0.0", click the "Check for update" button next to it. The model is roughly 2 GB and may take a few minutes to download.
On most Chrome 138+ installations, the Prompt API is enabled by default. If ReviewShield still shows "AI analysis not available," you may need to enable it manually:
chrome://flags/#optimization-guide-on-device-model
Set this flag to "Enabled BypassPerfRequirement" (this allows it to work on a wider range of hardware). Then also enable:
chrome://flags/#prompt-api-for-gemini-nano
Set this to "Enabled". Relaunch Chrome when prompted.
Navigate to any Amazon product page with reviews. If you're a ReviewShield Pro subscriber, the AI Analysis section in the panel should show a Trust Summary and Smart Highlights instead of "AI analysis not available."
If the AI features still don't appear, try refreshing the Amazon page. The first analysis after enabling the model may take a few seconds longer while Chrome initializes the session.
Troubleshooting
"AI analysis not available" even though the model is installed
Close all Chrome windows completely, then reopen Chrome and navigate to an Amazon product page. Chrome occasionally needs a full restart after the model finishes downloading.
The model download seems stuck
Go to chrome://components, find "Optimization Guide On Device Model," and click "Check for update." If the version still shows 0.0.0.0 after several minutes, check that you have at least 22 GB of free disk space and a stable internet connection.
I'm on a Chromebook or older laptop
Gemini Nano requires a GPU that supports certain compute features. Some older Chromebooks and laptops with basic integrated graphics may not qualify. The free ReviewShield features (trust score, signal breakdown, review flags) work on all devices regardless of AI availability.
I'm on a managed or school Chrome profile
Organization-managed Chrome installations may restrict access to on-device AI. If the flags in Step 3 are locked or grayed out, your organization has disabled this feature. Try using a personal Chrome profile instead.
Can I use ReviewShield Pro without the AI features?
Absolutely. ReviewShield's heuristic analysis (trust scores, signal breakdown, adjusted ratings, review flags) runs on every device with no AI required. The AI features are a bonus for Pro subscribers on supported hardware. If your device doesn't support Gemini Nano, you still get the full heuristic analysis with your Pro subscription.
